Black Bear Golf Club, previously named Myrtle West Golf Club, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Longs, South Carolina.
The course first opened for play in 1990. The course was designed by Tom Jackson.
Black Bear Golf Club is a classic parkland course completely engulfed by nature. The only way to enter this scenic course is by way of a covered bridge. The course is laid out with a series of 23 natural finger lakes. Not to worry, most water hazards are set well off the fairway, the course has only two forced carries.
Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,787 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 4,861 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 2, a par-5 that plays to 579 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 3, a par-3 that plays to 174 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 17, a 454-yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 3, a 174 yard par-3.
The course closed in 2016.
The course closed presumably because expenses exceeded revenues and the course was losing money. The club had just spent a lot of money regrassing the greens because the putting surfaces suffered winterkill in 1965. The property had been listed for sale. Its former head professional and GM have reportedly sued the owners for unpaid wages and golf shop revenues.
